Auschwitz, established by the Nazis in 1940, became the largest site of mass murder during World War II. Over 1.1 million people, mostly Jews, perished here. The camp complex includes Auschwitz I, the original camp with brick barracks and the infamous “Arbeit Macht Frei” sign, and Auschwitz II-Birkenau, the larger extermination camp with wooden barracks and gas chamber ruins.
